Using Freehand Tool (Lasso) to Make a Clean Tube

Freehand Tutorial by JoyceR.

1. Right click on the image and save to your hard drive, open it in psp. Choose image, resize and resize by 50%

2. right click on background in layer palette, and choose promote to layer. Now you have a transparent background.

3. Click on the freehand tool and use these settings

4.Using the lasso and the left mouse button, roughly make a selection around your image. Right click to close the selection. From the file menu , choose edit, cut, paste as new image.

5. Add a new layer, your background color check layer,Floodfill with color #8586AF. This layer needs to be dragged under your image layer(layer 1) so you can see the edges of your image as you work. You can also add some light color check layers. Never use black as a checking layer, it hides the edges.

6. Using your lasso and the left mouse button, make your first selection, right click to finalize the selection. Hit the delete key several times to remove the selection . Do small areas and try to get some of the yellow in your selection. The little picture on the right shows what it will look like after the first cut. Repeat this process all around the bear until the yellow is gone. Don't worry about the little furry hairs that stick out on the bear. We are going to do something fun to make him furry in a minute. Just get him as clean as possible.

7.I have a few areas with light pixels that I need to fix, so I will use the lasso again to clean them.

8.Now I am ready to make him fuzzy. I click on the retouch tool icon(the little hand) and use these settings for the smudge brush. I will go around the image pulling out little bits of the edges to make the fur. You can request the smudge tutorial for more info on this. Note: this bear could also be outlined with the draw tool set at point to point or freehand line in a color to match the fur to give a finished look, if you don't want to smudge. Request the outlining tutorial for further info on this technique.

9. Do your final pixel check for floating pixels, delete your color check layer, and your bear should look something like this: Save it as .psp or .tub file to a folder or export it as a tube. If you are exporting it as a tube, make sure the only layer you have is the one with the image on it. Delete the checking layer. If you have an outline layer, merge visible so you have one merged layer.
